Welding a pipe with traces of NaOH - issues?
Hi,
I need to perform a welding on a pipe who can contain traces of NaOH (I'll do a water cleaning first than air blowing on the pipe). Is there any violent reaction that can occur during this intervention?
Thanks.
If it is really sodium hydroxide, NaOH, then you don't want to introduce it to water. The heat produced will cause the hydrogen it produces to explode.
Perform the clean up in a well ventilated area and wear full protection to make sure no skin is exposed and you eyes and mouth are covered so as not to inhale any reactants.
Depending on what kind of metal the pipes are, the amount of hydrogen produced may be much greater than normal.
First neutralize the NaOH with vinegar and ensure that it is fully neutralized before washing away with water. Once neutralized the soultion of vinegar and NaOH can be drained safely and make sure the pipes are fully cleaned off. It is not advised to run water through the pipes if more NaOH is present, because the heat and hydrogen production could cause an explosion.
