Would accidentally hooking up my battery up backwards on my motorcycle power the headlights, control cluster?
My Yamaha Virago XV700 doens't have any markings on the battery wires that indicated positive and negative. After a carb rebuild, I couldn't start my bike but the headlights worked as well as the control cluster. I noticed the negative terminal was getting very hot.
The bike would turn over, but not start. Is it possible for the starter and electrical items to still work if the wires were crossed or would everything just be dead?
use a voltmeter, and set it to ohms, and hook one side of the voltmeter to one of the battery cable ( leave the battery out or disconnected). then hook the other cable of the voltmeter to the frame on a good ground spot. if you have continuity, thats your negative battery cable. if not, check the other battery cable to the ground.
one of those cable should show continuity when grounded, and thats your grond or negative battery cable.
yes its possible for almost everything to come on when hooked backwards, but like above answers, the starter will spin backwards. lots of times though, the cdi will get fried when hooked backwards.
hope that helps.
