How do I repair the carpet seam where it is torn between the livingroom and kitchen?
I have carpet in my livingroom and my dog tore a couple of sections out where the carpet meets in the kitchen and that is vinly tile and there is a metal strip layed down between the livingroom and kitchen. How would I fix the tear where the damage has been done? I do not want to replace the carpet. Could I buy a little larger metal strip and tack that down between the livingroom and kitchen this is mobile home carpet. Or should I cut that section out and lay more of the same peal and stick tile down and replace the metal strip tp cover the seams where the two rooms meet? Any advice would help me. Thank you.
If this is a double wide home, then the carpet extends over the marriage line. Trying to pull it back to lay a course of peel & stick tile may be a problem.
If the damage does not extend into the room more than an inch, then you can probably just stretch the carpet, and trim off the excess. The damage can run the entire length of the carpet bar...as long as it isnt too far into the room tho, you've probably got enough to stretch it so that the damaged area can be trimmed off, without taking up the carpet bar. The carpet bar (metal strip) may need to be pried up just a bit, to loosen the carpet (they usually get hammered down over the carpet to grip it better)...note - pried up, not pried loose from the floor.
You might be able to move the carpet bar back into the carpeted room about 1/4" if necessary. It will really depend on the nail hole locations. (Nails hold down the carpet bar - there will probably also be some staples along the edge of the vinyl flooring.
If the damage is more than a couple of inches into the room, but less than a few feet along the carpet bar, then you can try pulling a piece of carpet out of a closet, and use it to patch the damaged section. This will involve using a Seaming Iron, and straight edge. Try to pull the carpet out of the closet, so that the carpet fibers are running the same direction as that in the room, to get a better seam. (A Carpet Installer can do this type of repair for you).
Good Luck
