can i cut back my bleeding hearts and peonies in early summer?
my bleeding hearts and peonies are situated at the front of my garden...(like that when i moved in)....and smaller things are to the rear...this is the only spot in my garden where there is sun..can i cut these back when they are through blooming, which is now, so that the things in the rear of the garden can get sun...?..or would it harm the plants this year or in upcoming years?...thanks
no.... just like daffodil and tulip, these plants are using the food made now to store for next year..... if you cut them down now, your plants won't be much next spring.....
since everyone else is talking about MOVING them, I'd say you could move the bleeding hearts.... they need a whole lot less sun .... but if you move those peony now, you'll be doing a bad thing..... early fall is a better choice....
http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/1999/8-27-1999/transpeon.html
note that info is for Iowa... and that it says they won't bloom again for several years after moving them...?....
spring move for the bleeding hearts...
http://www.ehow.com/how_2363494_transplant-bleeding-heart-plant.html
altho if you move them now, you risk the leaves getting limp or dying off from transplant shock and not enuff water thru summer to re-establish... that's the death of the plant....
since the plants are situated that way , is it possible that the plants in the back were planted there to keep them OUT of the sun?..... maybe opening them up to more light is not the answer?.....
