How do i calculate at what suction pressure a 2mm thick steel pipe will collapse in / bend in / crumble in?
I am installing a new blower in a my plant which can generate a suction pressure of 2500 mm WG. My gas pipes are made of 2 mm thick SS316 sheets with 750 mm dia. Will they collapse / bend inward under this suction pressure.
u can try suction pressure plus atmospheric pressure on the wall of the pipe. maximum stress might occur at half, third or quarter stress points of load reversal. since gas is compressible, there is going to be change in pressure and temperature. idea gas law is pv=nrt. so p1/p2=t1/t2. u have to make sure that the pipe and gas is not overheated. then design the pipe as a bending and column member with thermal stress all with a very large safety factor. there might be head loss at bending corners and air chokes at nozzle. u also need to design for the start up and shut down of the pipe for air shocks as water hammers in water pipes. since i'm not a licensed engineer, risk it on your own. for more information, please read schaum's outline on fluid dynamics, 3th edition.
