How do you know how tight the Tie Down should be??

The big question is why you want a tie down. I know a lot of barrel racers who ride with a tie down because their horse has their head too high - the honest truth is that they are too lazy to train a good head set on their horse.

When a barrel horse turns they use their entire body. When they run their head bobs. The tighter you put the tie down the more difficult you make it for your horse to move. If you have an athletic horse - no biggie. I know a girl who flipped her horse on their first "trial run" with a tie down that was too tight. Not only did she break her arm but her horse had to be put down when he shattered a cannon.

This is NOT something to mess around with lightly. You can hurt yourself and your horse. The #1 best answer is to re-train your horse to keep his head down. If you don't work on training now you'll soon have a chargy horse who flips out when he gets in the arena and you'll have a totally ruined barrel horse.

If you're certain you need a tie down - start with it loose. It should aid the horse in keeping balance not tie his head between his knees.
