Looking for John Dorris and Miss Painter, 1800s?
John Dorris and Miss Painter are the parents of my grandfather William Edward Dorris, b. 1874 in Alabama (maybe Walker County?). John b. in GA, Miss Painter b. AL. Looking for help finding birth, marriage, death, cemetery, children, and anything on their line. Miss Painter may be Native American, not sure.
There is no William Dorris b. 1869 - 1879 in Alabama on the US Census for 1880, 1900, 1920 or 1930. I found him in 1910:
Ebenezer, Walker, Alabama
Columbus W Stevens 53
Dona Stevens 47
Richard H Stevens 21
Mollie J Stevens 16
William C Stevens 14
Drewy D Stevens 12
Lona Stevens 12
William E Dorris, 35, boarder, widowed, Ala, Ala, Ala
Luther Dorris 6
=====================
There is no one named Dorris in Walker County in 1880. In 1870, when they didn't ask "Relation", I found
John Dorris 48
Adaline Dorris 16
Nellie Dorris 14
Hanretta Dorris 8
Township 14, Walker, Alabama; Roll M593_44; Page: 58; Image: 112.
I'd bet large sums at long odds John was a widower and those were his kids, but there is a 5% chance he's an uncle or cousin who took in his brother's or cousin's kids. Given the customs of the times, chances are good all three will be married by 1880.
If this 1822 John is the father of William Edward, again considering the customs of the time, WE's mom was 10 - 30 years younger than John.
Sorry. Sometimes I can find them, sometimes I can't.
